At the shade of the Petite FRANCE, at STRASBOURG, BARTALI, MAGNI, KOBLET, SCHAER, Louison BOBET, TEISSEIRE, GEMINIANI, ROBIC, took with 111 competitors the fortieth departure of the cyclist Tour de FRANCE. FIRST STAGE, STRASBOURG/METZ. The Dutch WAGTMANS was the first escaped of a Tour left under the sign of rain. It was joined little before the SAARBRUCKEN supply where eight runners passed grouped with almost two minutes in advance. Arrived in METZ disputed itself to SPRINT between four men, and Switzerland SCHAER gained the first victory and the first yellow jacket. A l'ombre de la petite FRANCE, à STRASBOURG, BARTALI, gros plan au départ de STRASBOURG, MAGNI, KOBLET, SCHAER, Louison BOBET se retourne pour regarder derrière lui, TEISSEIRE, GEMINIANI, ROBIC, ont pris avec 111 concurrents le départ du quarantième Tour de FRANCE cycliste. Première étape, STRASBOURG - METZ. Le Hollandais WAGTMANS fut le premier échappé d'un Tour parti sous le signe de la pluie. Il fut rejoint peu avant le ravitaillement de SARREBRUCK où huit coureurs passèrent groupés avec près de deux minutes d'avance. L'arrivée à METZ se disputa au sprint entre quatre hommes , et le Suisse SCHAER remporta la première victoire et le premier maillot jaune. Sur élimination du SUISSE CROCI-TORTI, le départ de la deuxième étape METZ - LIEGE n'alignait plus que 118 concurrents. KOBLET, grand favori, ménageait ses forces. SCHAER emmena le peloton et, malgré une chute, passa avec lui la frontière du LUXEMBOURG puis celle de la BELGIQUE à la poursuite de WAGTMANS. A FRANCORCHAMPS, Louison BOBET, KOBLET, et BARTALI donnèrent la chasse à WAGTMANS et SCHAER de nouveau en tête. Avec 2' 30" d'avance, WAGTMANS et SCHAER se présentèrent à l'arrivée de LIEGE et SHAER se présentèrent seuls à l'arrivée de LIEGE et SHAER gagna de nouveau au sprint, classement général inchangé. Enfin, le soleil. Le soleil présida enfin au départ de la troisième étape, LIEGE - LILLE. DARRIGADE, Bernard GAUTHIER et HASSENFORDER s'échappèrent dès le huitième kilomètre. Après 50 kilomètres de chasse, GROSSO et VAN DER STOCKT les rejoignirent alors que le peloton avait deux minutes de retard. KIRCHEN ressera sa roue sans s'arrêter et rattrapa les échappés avec cinq coureurs, peu avant BRUXELLES. La frontière française fut traversée à nouveau par vingt coureurs regroupés, FORESTIER DREI et GAUTHIER furent lachés peu après et dix sept hommes foncèrent vers LILLE sur la piste cyclable, emmenés par Stanislas BOBER qui réussit à les lâcher et franchit seul la ligne d'arrivée avec plus d'une minute d'avance.
